Some days healing feels like progress and other days it feels like absolute hell!
People love to talk about recovery like it’s some beautiful journey where you wake up every morning feeling stronger, wiser, and more peaceful than the day before. They post the quotes. They talk about growth. They make it sound clean and inspiring.
But if you have actually walked through trauma recovery, you know that’s not how it works most of the time.
Most days it’s real messy.
Some days you wake up feeling like you’ve made real progress. Your mind is a little quieter. Your reactions are a little calmer. You notice that something that used to trigger the hell out of you no longer has the same grip.
And then there are the other days…

The days when memories come back out of nowhere. The days when your chest feels tight and you can’t even explain why. The days when your patience is gone and you are irritated by everything and everyone around you. The days when you feel like all the work you have done has somehow disappeared overnight.
Those days can make you feel like you’re broken.
I remember a period in my own life when I was doing a ton of internal work. Meetings, journaling, therapy, and prayer. Conversations that forced me to look at parts of my life I had buried for years.
For a while I thought I was doing great!
Then one afternoon something happened… It was nothing major. Just a comment someone made that struck a nerve I didn’t even realize was still raw.
And suddenly I felt that old anger rising up again. That old tension in my body. That familiar feeling that I thought I had already dealt with.
I remember sitting there thinking, what the hell is wrong with me. I thought I already worked through this shit!
But that’s the truth about healing that nobody explains well enough…

Healing isn’t a straight line!
It’s layers.
You peel one back… then another one shows up… then another one. Sometimes you revisit wounds you thought were already closed.
Not because you failed, because your mind and your nervous system are finally strong enough to process deeper things.
Trauma doesn’t just disappear because you decided to face it. Your brain has been protecting you for years… maybe even decades!
So when those waves hit again, it doesn’t mean you are going backwards.
It means you’re still doing the work.
And that work takes courage most people never see.
It takes courage to look at your own pain honestly. It takes courage to admit when you are struggling. It takes courage to keep showing up for your own healing when part of you wants to shut the whole damn thing down.
Slow down for a minute…
You don’t have to solve everything today.
Just breathe!
Try this for a few minutes...
Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds.
Hold that breath gently for 4 seconds.
Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds.
Do this 5 times.
Let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw unclench. Let your nervous system calm down a little.
Your mind has been carrying a lot.
Give it a minute to settle.
What part of your healing journey have you been too hard on yourself about lately?
What would it look like to give yourself a little more grace instead of more pressure?
You’re not crazy for struggling.
You’re not weak for feeling overwhelmed.
And you’re definitely not broken.
You’re a human being who went through some hard shit and decided to fight your way back anyway.
That takes strength most people never develop.
Keep going!
If this spoke to you today, share it with someone who might be quietly fighting their own battle right now.

You’re not walking this road alone… I promise.
