I used to get pissed off watching people get opportunities because of who they knew. Somebody's dad owned the company. Somebody's uncle made a phone call. Somebody had connections that opened doors before they ever had to prove a damn thing. I'd think, "Must be nice."
Then one day I realized something…
If somebody gives it to you, they can always take credit for it.
That changed the way I looked at everything.
From that point on, I wanted to earn my seat at the table. I wanted to know that if my name came up in a room I wasn't standing in, it wasn't because someone felt sorry for me or owed me a favor. It was because I'd shown up enough times, worked hard enough, kept my word enough times, and become the kind of man people could count on.
Years ago I took a meeting with someone who had every reason to brush me off. I wasn't the smartest guy in the room. I didn't have the biggest resume. I didn't have all the letters after my name. Hell, I didn't even feel like I belonged there. I remember sitting in my truck afterward wondering if I had completely embarrassed myself.
I didn't get what I wanted that day.
But I showed up again… and again.
Eventually that same person started calling me instead.
Not because we became friends or he felt bad for me…
Its because I earned their respect.

That lesson has followed me through every part of my life. Business. Recovery. Relationships. Fatherhood. You don't earn trust with one big moment. You earn it through a thousand small decisions. Showing up on time. Keeping your promises. Admitting when you screw up. Staying after everyone else quits. Doing the boring shit over and over until it becomes part of who you are.
Everybody wants the spotlight. Very few people want the lonely mornings, the late nights, the failed ideas, the uncomfortable conversations, and the years where it feels like you're giving everything you've got just to move an inch.
Good!
That's where your advantage is.
Most people tap out because they want recognition before they've earned results.
Don't be that person!
Just keep stacking days.
Keep becoming someone whose work speaks louder than their mouth ever has.
Because one day people are going to say, "Man, you got lucky."
Smile… because they weren't there when you earned every damn inch of it.
